The Manhattan Project

The Manhattan Project was the United States' first experience with nuclear weapons. It all started at the beginning of World War II when the United States began developing the atomic bomb to end the European War. The War ended before the bomb was fully developed. Unfortunately, the war in the Pacific was even worse then it had ever been. The Japanese had invaded China and had almost conquered the entire country. The United States nuclear program went into overdrive to create the atomic bomb.
Like Leo Szilard, Enrico Fermi finally developed the plan to create the atomic bomb in 1942.  Construction was underway, and by 1945, the first bomb was tested at Los Alomos.
The Russians were also developing their own version of the atomic bomb. The bomb was never have known to been finished, but there are some that think the project was completed.
The initial explosion was followed by a blinding light, and a heat wave. The cloud formed a mushroom, and it rose over 14,000 feet and was composed of dust. The explosion was the equivalent of 20,000 pounds of TNT. The American Atomic Bomb had been tested, and would soon be used to end the war in the Pacific.
